The Romans abandoned it as part of their withdrawal from Britain some time between 400 and 410 although it had been in decline during the previous century. The last Garrison troops went to Gaul around 407 although there is no detail about who or what was left in charge and the last request for help was refused in 410. In addition there is evidence that parts of the wall continued to be occupied during the 5th century by the Britons or the descendants of the units and militia who originally manned it. The Antonine wall which briefly replaced it further north had a much shorter life span of around 20 years (142-162) although it was restored at some point around 208.
