Huey P. Long (1893-1935) was governor of Louisiana from May 27, 1928 to January 25, 1932 and US Senator from Louisiana from January 25, 1932 to September 10, 1935. Known as the "Kingfish", he was a populist politician and speaker who controlled most of the state government for nearly 10 years. He championed many ideas involving the redistribution of wealth, which made him popular in the years of the Great Depression. Some of his suggestions in his "Share Our Wealth" program were ultimately adopted by FDR in the "Second New Deal". Although Long had aspirations of becoming President, they were cut short by his assassination in Baton Rouge in September, 1935.
