It depends on if you mean the country, or the island ..I'll tell you both. The island itself formed about 20 million years ago, with some more recent geographical features. The country first became 'a country' in 930 AD with the foundation of the parliament, but lost it's status with the pledge of fealty to the Norwegian king in 1262. So, Iceland wasn't 'fully independent' from 1262-1944. The current republic declared it's full independence from Denmark on 17. July 1944.

Iceland was formed from volcanic eruptions on the Mid-Atlantic ridge. Iceland was formed about 24 million years
