The first bills to have the motto were Series 1957 $1 silver certificates, as well as some 1935-G bills that were still being printed as part of that older series. It was gradually added to other denominations over the next 9 years and now appears on all coins and bills.

In 1955 Congress passed a law mandating that the phrase be placed on all US paper money. Up to that time it had only appeared on coins. The intent was to distinguish the United States from the so-called "godless Communists" who were our adversaries during the Cold War.

While the size and placement of the motto has generated a significant amount of controversy in recent years it's important to keep in mind that it was not on any of the money issued during the first 70 years of the country's existence. It was introduced on the new 2¢ coin struck during the Civil War in 1864, and it took until 1938 for it to be added to all other circulating coins.
