Julius Caesar was possibly the first play performed at the opening of the new Globe Theatre in 1599, based on a diary entry by Thomas Platter for September 21, 1599 saying he had attended a performance of the play at the Globe Theatre at about two o'clock. The year before, Francis Meres made a list of Shakespeare's plays and did not mention Caesar. It was therefore written in 1599. Few Shakespeare plays can be dated with such accuracy.

In 1599. Julius Caesar is one of the few Shakespeare plays we can date with some certainty because we have a diary entry of someone who saw it at the Globe on September 21, 1599, and also a list of Shakespeare's plays made in 1598 by Francis Meres which does not include it.

Shakespeare never lived in Rome ( I don't even think he went there in his life). He lived in Elizabethan England when Queen Elizabeth was queen (1533-1603). Rome ( Rome fell in 410 AD) and Shakespeare are NOT related in any way.

Sorry, I meant about the book Julius Caesar, the book. What period did he live in?

Oh, well, that is different. I just answered your question as it was written. Caesar lived in Rome 100 or 102 BC to 44 BC. He became dictator in 49 BC after he followed Pompey to Greece and subduing Pompey's legates to Spain. As a side note. When you go to Rome today they still point out the spot of his death and people still put flowers there.

Researchers aren't for sure, but based on the type of dialogue used in Julius Caesar and several other of his plays written during the time, it's guessed that it was written in 1599.
