A:The ages associated with Noah at key points in his life fall into two groups - numbers that were easy for the tradents to remember when handing the story down orally, and that based on the magic number 17.

According to The Bible, Noah was 500 years old when his first son was born. He was 600 years old when he boarded the Ark. These ages were, of course, quite easy to remember.

He died at the age of 950 years, which is easy to remember but also follows a standard formula used for most of the legendary characters in Genesis: 13x9 + 49x17 [7x7x17].

A:In the King James version... (Gen 9:29) And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.

According to traditional chronology, Noah died in 1754 BCE.

According to the Book of Genesis, Noah was born 1056 years after creation. He was exactly 600 years old at the time of the flood and exactly 950 years old when he died. Bishop Ussher studiously went through the biblical chronology, to estimate that creation took place in 4004 BCE, so the Genesis chronology means he died approximately 1998 BCE. There is no evidence that Noah ever lived, so other dates can be proposed, with no risk of ever being challenged.

Noah, the man of the Bible who built and rode out the world-wide deluge (flood), lived from about 2900 B.C. through about 1950 B.C. He lived for 950 years. This is an actual, literal 950 calendar years, nothing metaphorical about it.

The Flood, for which Noah is most famous, occurred at about 2300 B.C., and its waters covered the entire Earth. The waters came from both beneath the existing surface of our planet, and from the skies above. Prior to the flood, it is scientifically reasonable to accept that a thicker layer of humidity, clouds, water vapor at altitude existed, from which massive rains came, partially causing the Flood. The waters covered the whole planet for over one full calendar year. (See Genesis chapter 7.)

It is important to note the purpose of the Flood. This was divinely caused as a punishment for sin against the holiness of God. The only ones saved from death and damnation were the eight souls in the Ark: Noah, his wife, and his sons and daughters-in-law. From these few people have descended all the people now on our planet.

A:According to a strict reading of the Book of Genesis, which contains information about the lifespans of important characters in Hebrew tradition, Noah was born around 1056 years after the date of creation, which is thought by some to have been approximately 6000 years ago. He went on to live exactly 950 years, and so lived approximately 5000 to 4000 years ago.

However, the life span of Noah, like all those before him in the Bible, and all those down to the time of Joshua, is consistent with the use of numerology, based on the number 17, rather than with physical reality. The biblical age of Noah, 950 years, equals 13x9 + 7x7x17. If we recognise this as artificial, then we have to discard the biblical account of the progress of time and therefore can not say when Noah lived, if he lived at all.
