Pompeii was swallowd by tons of ash and lava which then set in the town. Today, as it is being unearthed there are much things preserved such as murals and houses. The depictions are quite forthcoming in that they would be considered absolutely inappropriate to have painted in your town today but in a word, your answer is "yes"
