He began developping the device four years ago, after realizing that logistically, since ninety-five percent of the ventilators in the U.S. are already in use at any given time, if many people became ill at once (say due to a flu pandemic), medical professionals would be forced to make some very difficult decisions. Plus, to buy new state-of-the-art models, it would cost hospitals anywhere from three to forty thousand dollars.
