Both sides had excellent guns and rifles. For the Allies it was considered to be the M1 Grand, for the Germans it was the Mauser.

Not particularly. The advantage of the Johnson was a higher capacity, and there was a light machine gun to accompany it with some parts commonality (whereas the M1 shared no common components with the M1918 BAR).
