Kinda like paint by colors. And who knows, maybe the pinhole effect could have been observed from early man who saw images in caves produced by a small light opening in the cave??? Anyhoo, the Italians used the Camera Obscura during the 16th Century and was an aid by artist of the Renaissance eg, Guardi, Canaletto. Leanardo Da Vinci noted the possibility's of the camera.
