Randall Erck invented the modern modem as we know it today. There were devices similar to modems used by the military, but they were designed more for the purpose of sending encripted nuclear launch codes to various bases around the world. Erck was still in high school when he developed a device that allowed himself to play his Atari Super Pong against a Japanese Auto Worker in Osaka Japan. After many failures, mostly due to his mom shutting off the Atari when it was time to eat, he finally hit upon the design of the modem we all use today.

The Bell 101 dataset or Bell 101 modem was the first commercial modem for computers, released by A.T.&T. Corporation in 1959 shortly after A.T.&T.'s Bell Labs announced their 110 baud modulation frequencies. The Bell 101 modem allowed digital data to be transmitted over regular unconditioned long distance telephone lines at a speed of 110 bits per second.

The Bell 101 could not be purchased, as with all other equipment connected to phone company lines at the time it was leased and had to be installed by phone company technicians.

You connected your computer or terminal to it via an RS-232 cable, which was designed originally only for connecting computers or terminals to Bell modems so that the phone company technician did not have to get involved with the computer itself while installing the modem.

Who invented the first PC modem and when?

Digital modems developed from the need to transmit data for North American air defense during the 1950s. Modems were used to communicate data over the public switched telephone network or PSTN. Analog telephone circuits can only transmit signals that are within the frequency range of voice communication. A modem sends and recieves data between two computers. Modem stands for modulate/demodulate.In 1962, the first commercial modem was manufactured - the Bell 103 by AT&T. The Bell 103 was also the first modem with full-duplex transmission, frequency-shift keying or FSK, and had a speed of 300 bits per second or 300 bauds. The 56K modem was invented by Dr. Brent Townshend in 1996.

How do you get dial-up on a PC?

First, you need a modem, either built into the PC or as a standalone peripheral device. Then you need software to talk to the modem. Then you need an ISP that still offers dial-up service.

Would it work if you connected an Ethernet cable to a modem and then to a ps3 to play on line?

If for instance you have a PC connected to the internet with an ethernet cable at a cable modem you can unplug the ethernet cable to the PC at the modem and Plug in a ethernet cable from the PS3 to the modem and a connection to the internet is possible. If the PC and PS3 are close enough you can just unplug the PC ethernet cable at the PC and move it over to the PS3. The first time you do this you need to go to the PS3 network setting and auto set the network settings. When you are done using the PlayStation 3 you just unplug the ethernet cable for the PS3 from the modem and plug the PC cable back into the modem for the PC to go back online or switch the cable back if it was close enough. When you get tired of doing this just purchase a router and plug the PS3 and PC into the router and plug the router into the modem.

What does a modem do to enable a ps2 online?

If nothing else is connected to the modem you can use a ethernet cable to connect the ps2 to the modem and the internet. If you also have a PC then you need to put a router between the modem and PC and also connect the PS2 to the router which will allow both the PC and PS3 to work off the same modem
