It was developed as a practical antibiotic during the late '30's and early '40's, becoming available in quantities in time to treat the Allied wounded on D-Day. It came out in 1928 by a Scotsman named Alexander Fleming.He discovered that it was a certain kind of contaminated mould and at first people thought it was powerful enough to kill didease in the human body, but it wasn't. He strenthened it in the 1940's so it would kill the disease in the human body. And it is spelled penicillin.
