The first computer printers were adaptations of existing punch card printing accounting machines or of electric typewriters. UNIVAC used a Remington Rand electric typewriter attached to a magnetic tape drive for off-line 10 cps printing. The IBM 700 series computers used a plugboard programmed IBM 407 accounting machine for on-line 100 lpm printing. Other early computer makers did the same, if they already made typewriters or accounting machines they used them, if not they bought them from companies that did and adapted them to their computer.

First printing press was invented in China by Bi Sheng in 1040 by movable terracotta, before popularised in Europe by Johnnes Guttenburg in 1443.

The printing press has been used through history, and has improved the technology in the days of the renaissance.

The printing press was first assembled by Johann Gutenberg, a goldsmith, in Germany around 1439. There has already been printing presses in ancient China, Korea and East Asia several hundred years previously before Gutenberg invented it, but they did not use method such as that of Gutenberg's.

I believe the press was perfected and used to print the first book in 1492. So I guess my question should have been when was the first book printed using a mechanical press. Thanks.

In the Western World the first printer was the printing press invented in the 1700's. This was a huge innovation since up until then, everything had to be hand copied. The printing press consisted of blocks with letters that could be arranged in a tray and then emptied to make a new page. It was first invented in China and was adopted and modified by Europe in the mid sixteenth century.
