Why did they move public executions?

Ironically, public executions were discontinued to prevent people from falling victim to pickpockets. Public executions (mostly hangings) were festival-like, with entire families attending, bringing picnic lunches, and making a day of it. The crowds were thick, and pickpockets had a field day going through the crowd, relieving them of their valuables. Authorities eventually moved executions inside the walls of prisons, with witnesses invited from the group of people with a connection to the case, the condemned prisoner's family, and interested VIPs.
