Semaphore, sometimes described as the "optical telegraph," was first developed in the late 18th century by French inventor Claude Chappe. He sent his first successful message over 10 miles in March of 1791. The system would soon be employed across France and is considered by many as the first successful telecommunication system of the industrial age.
