It happened in 1906.
Minor earthquakes happen in the Bay Area of Northern California often (there are thousands a year in fact). But the two most major earthquakes to hit the area happened in 1906 and 1989.
1906- The San Francisco earthquake was a magnitude 7.9 and was one of the worst natural disasters in American history. Fires broke out in the city, 3,000 people were killed and 80 percent of the city destroyed.
1989- The Loma Prieta earthquake measured 6.9 on the Richter scale and killed 63 people. It is often called the World Series earthquake because it occurred minutes before the third game of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's.
There have been two major San Francisco earthquakes.
The most devastating earthquake to hit San Francisco to date occurred on 18 April 1906 at 5:12 am. It measured around 7.7 to 7.9 on the Richter Scale. It is estimated that between 3000 and 6000 people were killed, but exact figures are not available. A great deal of damage was caused by the fires that burned out of control after the event.
Another major earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale occurred at 5:04pm on 17 October 1989. 63 people were killed and 3,500 injured, but there was extensive damage to infrastructure, with collapsed bridges, freeways and buildings, huge cracks in roads, land slides and fires.

San Francisco has been built on a fault line called the San Andreas Fault. It is a fracture in the crust of the Earth. San Francisco sits on the edge of the pacific tectonic plate. The pacific tectonic plate collides with the North American tectonic plate, causing earthquakes. San Francisco also has soft soils so it's very easy for an earthquake to happen that causes bad damage.
The 1906 San Francisco earthquake occurred at a transform plate boundary, where two plates slide past one another.
