The United States' flag design was created before the official start of the American Revolutionary War.
Congress gives credit to Francis Hopkinson who designed the flag. The first flag was made for the navy in 1776 and it was a basic British flag with stripes. The second flag had stars where the British flag had a cross.

The Congressional order for a new flag was enacted on June 14 1777.

The Continental Colors was first raised on a fighting vessel in December 1775 and served through out the colonial war until it was replaced by the stars and stripes on June 14, 1777.

On April 24, 1778 John Paul Jones, in command of the USS Ranger, became the first American officer to have the American flag recognized by a foreign power.

The largest flag in the world is a United States flag called the "Superflag." It weighs 3,000 pounds and measures 225 x 505 feet and will cover nearly 3 football fields. It was made for Thomas "Ski" Demski in 1992. It takes 600 people to unfold and display this huge flag.
