gredtide and mostrovois the great It may not be known. The animals slaughtered were carefully counted because they were expensive and had to be imported, but there was no lack of slaves, condemned criminals, and prisoners of war to fight as gladiators, so records were not kept.

As far as when the first gladiatorial fight took place, well, we don't know. Historians are pretty much agreed that they began in the Italian area called Campania and they were possibly memorials to some military victory. However the first gladiatorial fights in Rome were in 264 BC and they were staged by Decius Brutus and his brother as a funeral duty for their father.

The first recorded gladiatorial contest in Rome was in 264 BC. These contests were older than this. They did not originate from Rome. Some scholars thought that they were originally an Etruscan custom. It is now generally agreed that they originated from Campania, which then was the region around Naples, in southern Italy. Fourth century BC tomb frescoes from Paestum show paired fighters, with helmets, spears and shields, in a funeral blood rite which anticipate early Roman gladiator combats. The ancient historian Livy said that the first gladiatorial contests were held in 310 BC by the Campanians in celebration of their victory over their Samnite neighbours.

Originally the gladiatorial combats in Rome were part of the funerary rituals for funerals held privately by rich families. It was a blood rite (fight to the death) called munus Julius Caesar turned the combats into a public show in the 40s BC. The gladiatorial contests became part of the gladiatorial games which included many other events and lasted from 8 am to dusk. The combats stopped being fights to the death and sparing the defeated gladiator became common practice. The gladiatorial games included:

Displays of exotic animals

Animal hunts which replicated hunting scenes

Comic acts with clowns and dwarfs

Acrobatic and gymnastic acts

Tightrope walking

Music and dances

Animal acts similar to those at the circus

Tortures and executions

Wrestling

Boxing

Martial fights

Gladiatorial fights which were the highlight of the day

Very few of the names of actual gladiators have come down to us and even less information as to where they fought. However there are a few that we know for certain fought in the Colosseum. They are: Flamma, Verus, Priscus, Martianius, Raecius Felix, Hermes, Hilarus, Caladus and Crescens, the last two names were found in graffiti in Pompeii and it is only assumed that they fought in the Colosseum at Rome.

We have no idea when the first gladiator appeared. Gladiatorial combat is thought to have begun in the Italian area of Campania and it was some sort of a memorial of a war victory. However the first gladiatorial bouts in Rome were in 246 BC. and were presented as a "munus" or a funeral duty.

How did fighting arenas in ancient Rome work?

They had the fighting arena where the gladiator and animal would fight. They would starve the animal for 3 days so it would be starving, and keep it in the dark and then be thrusted out into the sunny arena. Under the arena they have the areas where the gladiator and animal wait. If the animal survives and kills the gladiator, it would be thrust into another fight where a trained gladiator to kill wild animals would kill it.
