In 1891 T.Gluck wrote about attempts in Germany to replace the hip ball using ivory to replace the femoral head.

On September 28, 1940 at Columbia Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, Dr. Austin T. Moore, performed the first metallic hip replacement surgery.
