What eventually became the European Union started as the European Economic Community in 1957. It had 6 countries as members. In 1992, the then 12 members signed a treaty that brought about the European Union. It officially came into existence in November 1993. Since then, 16 more countries have joined, bringing the total to 28 members, with others interested in joining.
