The first publicly demonstrated two-way video call was on April 9, 1930. It was a call between AT&T's Bell Laboratories and AT&T headquarters using early television equipment. Getting from there to Zoom took a long time, though, mostly because early versions of the video call required both parties to own ultra-expensive equipment that provided really awful picture quality.
AT&T spent the better part of the 20th century on failed videophone model after failed videophone model, eventually concluding that "people did not want to be seen on the telephone." How quaint.
The first video call was in 1956. The debut of video conference technology is a lot older than you might expect. In 1956, AT&T started working on a “Picturephone” prototype capable of transmitting still images every two seconds over regular analog public switched telephone network (PSTN) telephone lines.

Throughout the 2000s, video calling became increasingly popular. However, the idea of video calling seemed to be largely viewed “as a new communications paradigm separate from the traditional concept” of the telephone. Although available, video calling has not entered the mainstream; rather, it has been an alternative means of communication. The next generation of technology very well may change that.In 2010, Steve Jobs of Apple, Inc. announced a new feature of the radically innovative iPhone 4: FaceTime video calling. The iPhone 4 is not the first “videosmartphone”, and Apple is not the first to develop video calling. Nevertheless, Jobs boldly declared “it’s real now” concerning video calling. Apple has a history of taking existing technologies and making them better and more consumer-friendly. Time will tell if Apple's FaceTime will accomplish that.
