The Iliad (the story of Ilium, another word for Troy - the poem relates an episode in the Trojan War) and the Odyssey - an account of the ten-year journey of Odysseus home from Troy to ithaca.
The Iliad and the Odyssey cover two different time periods: The Iliad is about the siege of Troy during the Trojan War, and The Odyssey is the story of the soldiers journey home from Troy.
That is an embellishment provided by the poets who sang the story of the war. A better guess is that the capture of Troy was the richest prize in a ten-year looting expedition by the Achaeans (Greeks) along the coast of Asia Minor.
Overall the 2004 movie Troy received good reviews and high praises for it's action scenes. Some felt let down in the story writing and the fact that the movie left out the fact that Agamemnon was actually killed by his wife.

Troy is a movie (loosely) based in the Iliad. It of course is inaccurate to the story, but it is a wonderful movie.
Prince Paris fell in love with Helen, abducted her, and took her to Troy. It should be noted that she was married to Menelaus. The story is told beautifully in the Iliad. There is also a movie named "Troy" that tells this story.
