This is not a complete history... The first books had no covers but were scrolls. The first 'book' was created (invented is the wrong word for early book making) around China in 868 CE, but authorities believe it may have been much earlier. The Gutenberg press was invented around 1440 A.D. Note that all books were hardcover (paper back of today did not come into popular use until the 1900s.) The printing press allowed for mass manufacture of book copies. Before that, type was made on wood blocks.
