In Shakespeare's time, performances were primarily held during the daytime, typically from around 2 PM to 5 PM, due to the lack of artificial lighting in theaters. Theaters like the Globe were open-air, allowing for natural light to illuminate the stage. Performances were staged for various reasons, including entertainment for the public, royal patronage, and seasonal festivities. They often attracted diverse audiences, reflecting the social fabric of Elizabethan and Jacobean society.

The Royal Shakespeare Company is based at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, England. They have, over the years, also held tenancies and presented seasons of performances at many theatres in London.
Shakespeare's plays were typically performed in the afternoon, starting around 2:00 or 3:00 PM. This timing took advantage of natural daylight, as the performances were held in open-air theaters like the Globe. Evening performances were rare during his time due to the lack of artificial lighting.
The Globe Theatre
At that time all the female parts were played by boys. (Although performances in the large outdoor theatres like the Globe used sunlight to light up the stage and so were held in the afternoon, performances in indoor theatres used artificial light and so could be and were held at night.)
Plays in Shakespeare's day were often held at night. There was no electricity back then, so they could either use candlelight or sunlight to light the stage. If they wanted to use sunlight they had to act outdoors during the day. If they wanted to act at night or indoors (at court, a private residence, a hall or indoor theatre) they had to use candles. Candles were expensive so the ticket prices for indoor performances or night performances were higher.
