An Universal Indictator is more helpful because it shows the exact amount of acidity. Other indictators (example the red and blue litmus) just indicates whether or not the solution is acidic. The universal indicator gives you a specific color to which you can match a pH number therefore, telling you how acidic the soultion is.

The pratical use of a universal indicator is to determine the number on the pH scale. (the pH scal determines how acidic a substance is. Seven is neutral, any number below seven is very acidic and any number above seven is less acidic) By mixing a compound, litmus paper and the universal indicator, colours will change; which determines the how acidic the substance is.

RED-- VERY ACIDIC

GREEN -- NEUTRAL

BLUE -- LESS ACIDIC

^^ Basic colour changes

Hope it helped :)

Scientists find universal indicator very useful because a universal indicator is a mixture of organic dyes that gives a definite color change over a wide range of pH. Solutions containing a drop of the universal indicator is matched against a standard color chart to find the pH.The indicator solution is also available in the form of paper strips. The universal indicator not only differentiates better the acidic and basic nature of solutions but also indicates the strength of the solution.

Universal Indicator is used to test for the acidity of a solution.

Universal Indicator is used more than other indicators because it has a wider range of results; you can tell if it is acidic, neutral or basic.
There are many other indicators, which have a smaller, more specific range.

When determining the pH of a substance, if the indicator turns red, compound/solution is acidic. If the paper turns blue/purple, the compound/solution is alkaline. Green and the compound is neutral (water)

Universal indicator paper ranges from 1-12 1 being acidic and 12 being alkaline

Why is the universal indicator more useful than the red cabbage?

The universal indicator is better than the red cabbage indicator because the universal indicator has a wider range of pH that it can explain why a substance is acidic or basic. The red cabbage indicator only tests the substance if it is an acid or a base. Also, the universal indicators are made carefully and it is manufactured in a precise manner so the results are very reliable. Red cabbage indicators will vary in concentration which could cause errors to occur in determining the pH of a substance.
