When you were changing the oil in your Mazda rx 8 you cranked it with oil cap off now check engine light is ondid i hurt the engine?

As long as it was full of oil when you cranked it, you did no damage whatsoever. The check engine light came on because the ECU detected a problem with the emissions system which was the cap missing. Have the check engine light reset and you will be fine. You can disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes which may or may not reset the light. If not, it will have to be reset with an OBD2 scan tool.
