Founder one Albert Goodwill Spalding- himself a Hall of Famer. Chicago was in part the hub of the Sporting Goods industry due to at-cost leather supplied from the various meat-packing houses in the city (no longer true). many Baseball and other sports components are made out of some form of Leather- gloves, baseballs ( Horse hide) footballs- Pigskin, etc. Spalding also made Leather coats and jackets for the Defense services and some were sold surplus for airmen- and others, a leather jacket is handy in the windy city.
