Step up Transformers are used to increase voltage.

Step down transformers are used to decrease voltage, these are the most common. The can on the power pole is a step down, a doorbell also uses a step down transformer.

A stepup transformer steps the voltage up to a higher voltage for transmission over a long length of wire, the voltage used is about 1 kV per kilometre of distance as a general rule, so for transmission over 100 km you would tend to use somewhere around 100 kV.

Answer for UK, Europe and countries running a 50 Hz supply service.

After the energy has been transmitted it must be stepped down to a voltage that can be used. A small town in the UK might be supplied from a ring circuit at 33 kV which is then split down to several 11 kV circuits to be fed to small substations feeding groups of houses at 415 V 3-phase, with the line to neutral voltage providing 240 v single-phase supplies to individual properties. Those stages would use step down transformers.

What is the name given to the large transformers used in transmission systems to step up and step down?

step up transformer

Which part of the process of distributing electricity changes the voltage of the current?

The transformers step-up and down voltage for transmission and use.

How can you convert 1000000 volts to several hundred 9 volt power sources?

On the whole AC electrical conversions are done with transformers. In your question both step up and step down transformers will be utilized. Step up transformers will be utilized to get the generated voltage up to transmission voltage. At the voltage transmission destination the voltage will use step down transformers to decrease the voltage to the consumers load requirement. Or you could connect 111111 resistors in series and take the voltage off each one of them .. but ull have to put in consideration the load resistance ..

What is transformers job?

It depends on the type of transformer:transmission/distribution transformers step up or step down system voltagesisolation transformers electrically isolate two systems without affecting their voltagesmatching transformers are used in electronic circuits for impedance matchinginstrument transformers step down voltages (voltage transformers) or currents (current transformers) for measurement or protection applications

Differentiate step-up transformers from step-down transformers?

Step up transformers increase the voltage, while step down transformers reduce it. Higher voltages are better for electricity transmission/distribution, because, for any given load, the higher the voltage, the lower the resulting current. This means the supply conductors can have a lower cross-sectional area and the resulting saving in copper makes the installation cheaper. A lower load current also means lower line (energy) losses.

How are step-up and step-down transformers used in the transmission of electric current from the electric company to homes?

(This is what my teacher said, I wrote this down in my notes) The answer is, Step-up transformers are used to increase the voltage of an electric current before it is sent out over transmission lines from the electric company. Step-down transformers are used to reduce the voltage of current from high-voltage transmission lines before it enters homes and businesses. Some devices, such as televisions, contain step-up transformers that increase the voltage once again.
