Actually the term freeze plug is a misnomer. They are casting plugs, and have nothing to do with protecting the engine from freezing. They are located on the side of the block just below where the heads contact the block.
Some 400 small blocks have three per side and on some engines there are two in the front.l
NEW ANSWER: He is right about the casting plugs and 3 and sometimes just 2 on the sides of the 400 SB engines. But all Chevy V-8 and V-6 engines have 8 total. on each side under the heads where they bolt to the block and 2 in the front 1 on each side of the timing cover and 2 in the rear of the engine block were the transmission bolts up to. That makes 8
The heads themselves have NO freeze plugs in them. But the block/engine has 8 freeze plugs in it.

It has 8 of them.
There are 8 freeze plugs.

If your asking about FREEZE OUT PLUGS then it has 8 of them.
Should be 1 5/8".
all depends if it's a 6cyl. or a v8.
You still have to remove the transmission on a van to access the rear freeze plugs.
