Look under AD (not A-1) Skyraider model kit if you want to build a plastic model yourself. Also, warplanes.com has wooden models made to order. Search for Tamiya A-1 Skyraider. It is a 1/48 scale---very large model. There was one old kit built in the 1960's that was same scale. Nice model.
Ky, an A1 Skyraider pilot with SVAF.
The "Douglas A-1 Skyraider" was the best all around attack aircraft .
US supplied the RVN with M41 Walker Bulldog light tanks, A1 Skyraider attack planes and F5 Freedom Fighter jets.
Two US Navy Propeller driven A1 Skyraiders shared an aerial kill of a NVAF MiG17 on 20 June 1965. This air action was recently depicted on televison's "dog-fight" series under the caption of "Vietnam Gun Kills." As shown on the TV program, a NVAF MiG17 closed head on into two USN Skyraiders...all three aircraft firing all of their guns. The two A1's were wing tip to wing tip and the MiG17 burst into flames, and flew just between the two oncoming A1's, barely missing either plane. The MiG continued on, impacting into a hillside. Bot A1 pilot's received a "shared kill." The only solo aerial victory by an A1 Skyraider was flown by USN Ltjg William T. Patton. He shot down his MiG 17 jet aircraft on 09 October 1966 using his 20mm cannons. Patton entered a cloud, and upon exiting it, he observed the NVAF pilot floating to earth in his parachute. That was enough to confirm his kill, as he didn't actually see the MiG crash nor burn. Patton's A1, cowling #409, was released as a Radio Controlled flying model in 2008 by Kondor. The model airplane uses a 4-stroke glow fuel powered internal combustion engine, and has a 70 inch wingspan. Osprey Publications has also recently released a book covering the A1 in Vietnam: US Navy A-1 Skyraider Units of the Vietnam War #77, 2009; ISBN 13-978-1-8460-3-4107.
To name a few important items: 1. M41 Walker Bulldog light tanks for their armored forces. 2. A1 Skyraiders for their air force. 3. M16 assault rifles for their infantrymen. Note: Number 3 is important because since 1955 the South Viet infantryman had been armed with US WWII rifles & machine guns. (# 2) Although the A1 Skyraider was a "WWII designed" airplane (propeller driven) it didn't fight in WWII; its first war was in Korea...and the A1 (nicknamed the SPAD and Sandy) was probably the best ground attack plane in the war because it carried more bombs and bullets and stuck around the battlefield longer than any other US warplane. The A1 had to be replaced because they were being used up and no more were being built. Todays famous A-10 Warthog (jet) is the equivalent of the A1 Skyraider...in performance, mission, durability, reliability, firepower, and protection.
Here is an example:=RIGHT(A1,(LEN(A1)-(FIND(",",A1)+1)))&" "&LEFT(A1,(FIND(",",A1)-1))See related links for more information.
A1 (Skyraider) was a US Navy & US Air Force propeller driven attack plane used in the Vietnam War; it's call sign was sometimes "Sandy". The A1 was originally designed as a dive bomber at the end of WWII (it never saw action in WWII, arriving at the end of the war).
Excel formulas that will find the average of cells A1, A2, and A4 are: =AVERAGE(A1 ,A2, A4) or =AVERAGE(A1:A2, A4)
First tour May-Oct '66; Second tour Jun-Nov '67. Item of note: LTjg William T. Patton flying a "Spad" (A1 Skyraider, propeller driven dive bomber), shot down a NVAF MiG17 during his carrier's (Intrepid) first tour. The ONLY Spad to make a solo jet kill; two other Skyraiders (from the USS Midway) shared an aerial victory against NVAF MiG-17s. The Kondor Radio Control (R/C) model airplane company just came out with Patton's Skyraider in 2008. The flying model has a 70 inch wingspan and can be mounted with a 2 or 4 stroke glow fuel engine; the Spad is properly numbered with # 409 on the cowling. The aircraft was also featured on the cover of "Model Airplane News" in the September 2008 issue. The cover photo shows Patton's A-1 diving, has his name on the cowling, and his "kill" insignia just below his canopy.
