You can find them wherever there are sedimentary rocks, for example, because as the sediments from the water settled out, they turned to rock around whatever was mixed in with them (like fish or other animals). You can also find them wherever there were trees, because trees become petrified if conditions are right. Fossilized tree sap is also called amber. You can even find fossils trapped in tar pits or salt deposits.
