And if you are not scouting the pawn shops, you may be missing the bike you've been looking for at a great price. You may consider posting a want ad to see who might call with what. And there are several bike forums online with units for sale posted. Buying new can get you a good bike, and a shop tends to stand behind its bikes. But a careful shopper who is just a bit lucky will get better value picking up a used machine. To fully take advantage of a bargain on a used bike, you have to be able to spot problems. You also have to be able to evaluate components and condition to pick a price point that works well. If you feel you cannot do this, find someone who can and take them with you. That or make arrangements to have a unit you are considering evaluated by a skilled mechanic you trust - and compensate them for their time.
