The best way to learn about the world of racing is to volunteer at a local racing stable. Most trainers, whether they train racing horses, cutting horses, ect, start at the bottom and work their way up. Clean stalls, clean tack, groom, exercise or cool down horses that have been worked. There are really no short cuts. And ask questions. Find a mentor. Most horse trainers don't mind passing on knowledge. Be a sponge and soak up every fact or experience and learn from it. When you do it for the love of the horse and not for money or prizes you can't miss. Good luck.
Horse racing is not a team sport. Jockey's ride the horses in races, Trainers train the horse, and Owners own the horse.
it means that the horse and jockey and trainer and somtimes the owner will travel by train or plane to get to the next race.
A jockey is someone who races horses, an equestrian is someone who rides them.
Tom Thumb
Horses do not train horses, humans do. Sometimes the lead mare of the herd or the dominate animal will teach the horse respect and such, but as far as learning to ride goes, humans will train horses to be able to be ridden, jumped, lunged, ect.
If the odds of a horse winning a horse race are 2 to 7 then the odds against that horse winning the race are 7 to 2.

Your horse needs to be fully grown, and medically well but different horse competitions allow different ages. Look at the website for the race or ask someone that is an expert on that particular race/event/competition.
Yes, it WAS a race, it is no longer a horse race.
Your horse needs to be supple, know his leads, go fast while still perfectly under control, back-up and stop really well and have great transisions. See the link below to read all about how to train your horse to barrel race and all that you will have to put into it.
A horse courser is someone who deals race horses. That person runs their horses and also keeps some of their horses for racing.
