Bay leaves come from the bay laurel tree (Laurus nobilis), sometimes called "sweet bay" which is a semi-tropical tree. Hardy to zones 8-10. If will not survive if the temperatures drop below 5 degrees Fahrenheit. It grows best in rich, moist, well drained soil, in full sun but protected from wind.

If you live in an area where it can grow outdoors you could try to germinate the plant from SEED, leaves will not germinate, nor for that matter, will the seeds if you allow them to dry out.

You may also propagate this plant using stem cutting or layering techniques.

I have not found a source for bay laurel seeds in North America, but most good nurseries (particularly those specialising in herbs) will usually carry the seedlings.

If you do not live in zones 8-10 the bay laurel is an excellent house plant if kept well attended. See growing conditions above.

See the related links below for more information on growing and using bay laurel.
