"In 1700 Sebastian, now fifteen and thrown on his own resources by the death of his brother, went to Luneburg, where his beautiful soprano voice obtained him an appointment at the school of St. Michael as chorister. He seems, however, to have worked more at instrumental than at vocal music. Apart from the choristers' routine, his position provided only for his general education, and we know little about his definite musical instructors. In any case he owed his musical development mainly to his own incessant study of classical and contemporary composers, such as Girolamo Frescobaldi (circa 1587), Caspar Kerl (1628-1693), Buxtehude, Froberger, Muffat the elder, Pachelbel and probably Johann Joseph Fux, the author of the Gradus ad Parnassum on which all later classical composers were trained."

∙ 15y agoHe didn't attend any formal schools, per se ... rather was taught music by his brother and other family members. There weren't many universities in the early 1700's ;-).

He has 20 children, but there are only 10 had survived to adulthood. His first wife, Maria Barbara Bach (1684-1720), his second cousin, bore him 7 children, but only 4 survived to adulthood, they are Catharina Dorothea (1708-1774), Wilhelm Friedemann (1710-1784), Carl Philipp Emanuel (1714-1788) and Johann Gottfried Bernhard (1715-1739). His second wife, Anna Magdalena Bach (born Wilcke, 1701-1760), bore him 13 children that only 6 children survived to adulthood, 2 of them are Johann Christoph Friedrich (1732-1795) and Johann Christian (the 'London' Bach, 1735-1782). His first wife died when he was 35 years old, while his second wife died 9 a-half years after his death.
