The Polo Brothers, Maffeo and Niccilo, merchants from Venice Italy, left on a trading mission in 1260 and by 1266 had reached the court of the Great Khan in Beijing China. They returned to Venice in 1269 with letter to the Pope from Kublai Khan and many stories of their adventures. In 1271, when Marco Polo was 17 years old, he set off with his father and uncle on another journey which eventually brought them back to the court of the Khan. Marco was a very well educated young man for his time and, according to Marco, Kublai Khan was so impressed by him that the Khan entrusted him with diplomatic missions throughout China, in addition to Burma and India. Marco was also very impressed with the many social and scientific things he discovered on his travels in Asia. Upon his return home in 1295, Marco spent many years writing of his travels, his association with Kublai Khan, and the many things he had learned on his trip. His travels took 24 years and he had traveled an estimated 15,000 miles. See the links below for further information.
I think it was because he wanted to find shorter silk trade routes through Asia. Back then, China's biggest export to Europe was silk, and merchants were constantly going back and forth through routes that were very long, dangerous. The old routes also sometimes went through deserts in the Middle East.
of course they took off from venice!

The most famous European to serve in the Kublai government was probably Marco Polo (1254-1324). In the book, The Travels of Marco Polo, Polo is said to have served as a government official under the Mongolian ruler of China, Kublai Khan.According to the book, Polo served under Kublai Khan for two decades; however, scholars disagree on the truthfulness of The Travels of Marco Polo, as Polo may have collected stories he heard from other travelers and passed them off as his own.It is possible that Polo actually served under Kublai Khan; Kublai was visited by several Europeans during his reign in China.

Marco Polo was born in the Venetian Republic. While the exact birthplace is unknown, most biographers point towards Venice itself as Marco Polo's home town. His father Niccolò was a merchant who traded with the Middle East, becoming wealthy and achieving great prestige. Niccolò and his brother Maffeo set off on a trading voyage, before Marco was born. In 1260, Niccolò and Maffeo were residing in Constantinople when they foresaw a political change; they liquidated their assets into jewels and moved away. According to The Travels of Marco Polo, they passed through much of Asia, and met with the Kublai Khan. Meanwhile, Marco Polo's mother died, and he was raised by an aunt and uncle. Polo was well educated, and learned merchant subjects including foreign currency, appraising, and the handling of cargo ships, although he learned little or no Latin.
