I'm not sure exactly when, but I know he retired to Sussex and lived as a beekeeper with no one for company except for his bees and his books. Very sad, I know. But at least he didn't die!!
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle veiled his famous character Sherlock Holmes by stating that he has retired and is living somewhere in Sussex engaged in bee-keeping, agricultural cultivation and research.
"My villa is situated upon the southern slope of the Downs, commanding a great view of the Channel." -- Sherlock Holmes, 'The Adventure of the Lion's Mane'
It is generally accepted as sometime in late 1903 or early 1904 when Holmes retired, and he would have been about 50 years old (based on other speculations).
He is from a story. He does not exist, so he did not retire.

According to His Last Bow, the last story in the series, Sherlock Holmes retired to Sussex. He became a bee keeper. While in retirement, he wrote Practical Handbook of Bee Culture:
"But you have retired, Holmes. We heard of you as living the life of a hermit among your bees and your books in a small farm upon the South Downs."

It means that the answer is obvious and that it shouldn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure it out. It is a longer way of saying 'Hello, Captain Obvious!'
Pets would have required care and feeding and such, things that Sherlock Holmes might not have had time or inclinations for. Perhaps it is better that he did not have any as they might have died from neglect. Watson would've had to take care of him/her, grumbling all the way at Holmes and his lack of caring.
Sherlock Holmes used a seven percent solution of cocaine quite often. And there is a questionable mention of opium use I discovered while reading the "The man with the twisted lip". Holmes was prescribed morphine by a physician after being wounded in "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client."
Most likely, considering he's never been married and in those days usually that meant no sex, and even if sex did take place outside of marriage Sherlock Holmes never gave the impression he was the sort of guy that went around sleeping with women.
probably not because in the sherlock holmes books/movies it ALWAYS ends up that he solves it and that doesn't always happen in real life and the sherlock holmes and fition anyway

Sherlock Holmes is based in England, which is located in Europe. London is the main city, but the adventures often take them to other locations. There is even at least one story that is located on the European continent proper.
A: Study in Scarlet.
Probably the easiest and quickest place to find a Sherlock Holmes anthology would be Amazon. Other web based book retailers would be equally good, but may take more research.
