Birmingham wasn't called the black country. The black country was the West Midlands areas such as Oldbury, Quarry Bank, Black Heath, Brierly Hill etc. They were so named because of their vast foundry and heavy engineering industries. The many chimneys of which turned the sky, and the locals washing, black.

British historians suggest that it is likely that the name existed even before the soot and coal dust of the Industrial Revolution coverd the area.

Outcroppings of black coal scarred the surface of the local heath, and the presence of coal so near the surface rendered the local soil very black.
