The original purpose of Sonic the Hedgehog was to act as a mascot for SEGA as well as be a rival for Mario. Yuji Naka, Naoto Oshima and Hirozaku Yasuhara were the three on the project. They were aiming for simplicity and being able to attack whilst jumping, whilst being able to move at high speeds.
They worked on designing several animals such as cats, mice and rabbits. Their final decision came down between an armadillo and a hedgehog, but whilst both characters rolled into a ball, an armadillo protected itself by creating a shield, rather than attack.
Naoto Oshima presented one of his older character designs that didn't make the cut, "Mr. Harinezumi", translated as "Mr. Hedgehog", or as most know it, "Mr. Needlemouse".
This was the base of what Sonic the Hedgehog was to be developed upon, until we see the (classic) hedgehog we know today.

∙ 12y agoBack in the 80's Nintendo practically owned the video game Market with Super Mario, SEGA wanted to create a game that could out-do Mario, so pretty much all of Sega japan's employees got to designing a new character for the new game, many submissions were made but the one that was picked was "Mr. Needlemouse" created by Naoto Oshima, after a few design tweaks the design was sent over to Sega of America to see what they thought. They felt that the character needed some changes to make him more appealing to the American audience so they made a few changes to the characters design re-named him "Sonic the Hedgehog" at first sega japan did not like the changes but eventually decided to go with it, the Game was programmed by Yuji Naka and was Realeased on June 23rd 1991 and since then Sonic has become one of Video Games most recognised Characters around the world. In the original Sonic the Hedgehog game, the back of the game mentions that he wears a special type of shoes called "Power Sneakers". According to that game, they were the source of his speed. "...his cool spiky haircut and power sneakers that give him superspeed." However, Sonic replaces his shoes for "Light-Speed Shoes" in "Sonic Adventure" and is just as fast. Power Sneakers was obviously an abandoned idea.
