In the original 1900 book edition of 'The Wizard of Oz', the Wizard first lived in Omaha, Nebraska. But in his youth, he accidentally sailed into the beautiful, enchanted, magical lands of Oz. Once there, he became Supreme Ruler. He needed a place that would be big enough to serve as living quarters and office space for him. So he had the Emerald Palace built for him in the Emerald City of Oz.
In the beloved 1939 film version, the Wizard lived out of a suitcase as the humbug medium, Professor Marvel. He set up a transient business near where Dorothy Gale lived in Kansas. In Dorothy's dreamland sequences in the beautiful, enchanted, magical places in Oz, the Wizard lived in the Emerald Palacein the Emerald City. But the Wizard longed to return to his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. So he ended up sailing away in the hot air balloon in which he originally had arrived.
