The origin is a Dakota Sioux word ayuxbe (perhaps meaning "sleepy"), applied to another tribe who called themselves Báxoje. These people were introduced to French explorers by the name ayuxbe - pronounced eye-ooKH-bay. The French explorers tried to say it and came out with Ioway, which has since been used as the name of that tribe.

Ioway was often said as Iowa by English-speaking white Americans and it is this tribal name that was applied to the state of Iowa when it was granted statehood on 28 December 1846.
