Police detectives work the felony cases. They obtain a case file, speak with the victim, take pictures of evidence if available, interviews, arrest, answer questions in court. A good detective makes a good case file. The case file is what the whole court case is based off of. If your case falls into the hands of a detective, my best advise is to keep incontact with him/her. Detectives cant break the case alone. Speaking with people, knowing the area and using all sources (like information data bases) are the key to solving a case.

Detectives work partially in their office, using a computer, a land-line phone, a cell phone, and other office equipment.

They also spend part of their time working out of their vehicles, writing notes, making and answering the phone, communicating by radio, and driving around from one crime scene or witness' home to another. They might spend most of the day in their car, some days, and only see their office once in the morning and once at the end of their day.

And detectives spend a lot of time working on their feet, too. Standing or sitting whereever the witnesses are, wherever the evidence is found, etc.
