Best Answer

Chipmunks make their nests by burrowing into or under items wherein they can bring a variety of dried flora and/or manmade materials including straw, grass, hay, chewed paper, string and a variety of other items. Chipmunks will also inhabit enclosed spaces in automobiles if given the opportunity.

Chipmunks live underground. They prefer to burrow near or under a rock, log, or other solid object. You can tell a chipmunk hole, by the lack of a dirt mound. There can be more than one entry to the burrow. A chipmunk will continue to dig, for its entire life. There are always side chambers, one will be where the chipmunk sleeps. It is usually filled with grass, leaves and/or feathers. Other chambers are used to store the chipmunk's food supply. Unlike the squirrel, the chipmunk keeps all of its food hidden in one place and underground. During the winter, they will live on this supply of food and may not leave its nest for long periods of time. While it does not hibernate, the chipmunk may go into a state of torpor. It may wake to eat from time to time. But do little else.
