Do finches fly south for the winter?

Some finches do fly south in winter, such as the Goldfinch, and Purple Finch. Pine Siskins move south in the winter, as do Evening and Pine Grosbeaks. Note: There is not total agreement on the migration of Goldfinches as a regular winter pattern, but they will definitely move south in winter as food supplies are depleted. Where do goldfinches nest in winter?

The American or Eastern Goldfinch (Carduelis tristis) is migratory, ranging from mid-Alberta to North Carolina during the breeding season, and from just south of the Canadian border to Mexico during the winter. However, not all Goldfinches migrate, especially if they live in the south. Here in NE Georgia, I have Goldfinch at my winter feeding station. In the spring they nest in my woods and when the sunflowers are ripe in the summer, they come out from the woods to devour the seed heads.
