Best Answer

Crabs shed their exoskeleton to get more space. It usually means that they have grown out of their shells.

When hermit crabs shed their skin (exoskeleton) it is called molting. Hermit crabs undergo this process underground. They store up food and water.

Some signs of about to molt are exessive digging, eating, drinking, and a sack growing under it's claw.

The Molting process can take weeks up to months depending on size. Small hermit crabs will molt two to three times a year while larger one might molt once a year.If you think your hermit crab is dead DO NOT dig it up, if it smells like dead fish then a hermit crab is dead.

After hermit crabs are done with this process they will have their old exoskeleton, i know it's gross but DON'T throw away the old exoskeleton, the hermit crab will need to eat it because it is enriched with vitemins it will need let it eat it ~ Ew GROSS! hoped this helped!

Does the hermit crab shed its shell of its claws legs ect?

A hermit crab grows out of it's shell and looks for a new discarded snail's shell. Snails produce the shells and once the snails die the shells become homes for hermit crabs. Hermit crabs molt their exoskeleton Large Jumbo crabs molt about once a month and smaller crabs molt a few times a month. They collect water and food into their shell and burrow deep into the sand where they shed their old skeleton and eat it. They eat their old skeleton to regain nutrients that they lost during the molting process. If a hermit crab looses it's legs (which doesn't usually happen during the molting process) they will regenerate.

Difference between an exoskeleton and a shell?

An exoskelton is the layer on the hermit crabs actual body that they shed when they outgrow it. (similar as how a snake sheds their skin) A shell is that which the hermit crab takes as a home that normally if from snails.

How do crabs grow?

Crabs grow out of their shells and they also shed their skin to do that. Meaning they molt their skin.

How do hermit crabs shed?

Hermit crabs molt, because they have exoskeletons and like snakes need to ''shed'' their skin to grow. Hermit crabs will eat and form a sack under them with all the nutrients they need (before then they will eat and drink alot), and will dig underground and shed their skin. They stay underground depending on size, from 2 weeks to monthS. NEVER dig them up because they will get so stressed out that they will die (happened to me :(:( RIP swirlly) To tell if a hermie has died you need to smell the crabitat. If it smells like dead fish, then a hermie has died :(:(:(. To learn more plz follow the link below

Can hermit crabs regenerate arms?

Yes, hermit crabs can regenerate arms and legs. They do this by molting, much in the way that snakes do when they shed. From there, their legs can regrow and regenerate themselves over time.
