Flies, like all invertebrates are cold blooded. They need the heat of the day and the sun to become active. At night a fly's metabolism slows. At night time they find small cracks and crevasse to hide in until the can warm up ready for the next day.
Well, you made my day and gave me a good belly laugh! Good question though. It's sort of like asking "do chickens have teeth?" or "do fish feel pain?" Actually, flies rest, but don't sleep. They will land on something and rest, but their eyes (you've seen the movie Fly) are constantly active. "Said the spider to the fly." LOL Yup, those dirty little suckers never sleep and only rest so they can start at you all over again when you switch the lights on.
