A 'light year' is nothing but a lowly unit of length or distance, just like an inch, a mile, or a kilometer.

A 'light year' is the distance light travels in a year. That's roughly 5,878,700,000,000 miles.

(You can see why it's easier to use 'lights years' than miles to talk about long distances.)
