Painted Turtles lay eggs near the body of water that they are living in. They will usually lay with in about 10 feet of the waters edge. Although, painted turtles are picky at where they lay their eggs and they don't follow certain rules so it mainly just depends on the turtle's preference. A female may dig several tester holes before laying her eggs in the chosen hole. After burying the eggs the female may also urinate on the hole which creates a soon-to-be-solid mud block that protects the eggs from predators.

The number of eggs has been strongly correlated with body size, thus a larger painted turtle lays more eggs than a smaller one. A female will lay up to 23 eggs, but this depends on subspecies.

Western Painted Turtles, Chrysemys picta bellii, lay up to 23 eggs with an average of 12.

Midland Painted Turtles, Chrysemys picta marginata, lat up to 17 eggs with an average of 8.

Eastern Painted Turtles, Chrysemys picta picta, lay up to 11 eggs with an average of 5.

Southern Painted Turtles, Chrysemys dorsalis, lay up to 11 eggs with an average of 4.

It has been suggested, however, that these numbers are due largely or even entirely to the body size correlation, as the egg clutch curve fits the body size curve across subspecies.
