Atticus Finch is a respected lawyer in Maycomb county. His wife died a few years ago and he has two children, Jem and Scout. He also has a black housekeeper, Calpurnia.
When a black man is accused of raping a white woman, Atticus is given the task to defend the man, Tom Robinson. This angers the town as Atticus actually aims to save Tom. For the latter half of the novel, Atticus becomes the butt of criticism but he overlooks all this petty behaviour.
