In order to remove the sword from its stone, your Hero must have upgraded physique, health, and toughness. Generally you'll have to upgrade your stats quite a bit, but there is a chance that you'll be able to receive the sword early in the game (low stats were rolled for getting the sword).
Simply, don't train your character's strength attributes too much, until you reach the Temple of Avo. There, after give it a try to pull the sword out of the rock, the spectators will tell you what attributes you need to train:Physique - You need some more 'fresh air and exercise'.Health - You better come back when you're more fit.Toughness - You're not tough enough.
More specifically, you need to increase physique by five, health by two, and toughness by three from your stats when you attempt to remove it the first time.

∙ 14y agoTemple of Avo. Get level 7 strength, level 7 toughness, and level 6 endurance, and you should get it out. Your reward is the Harbringer, a pretty good sword.
